The BlackBerry PlayBook looks set to land safely on UK shores in the second quarter of 2011, following its release in North America between January and March. That’s the word direct from Gregory Wade, RIM’s top exec in the Asia Pacific region.

That means we might not see the iPad rival in waiting arrive here until next June, putting it way behind the iPad 2 and the undoubted slew of Android tablets which will get an airing at CES in January.
Wade also confirmed to Digitimes that the PlayBook would cost $500 (£311). RIM’s CEO recently claimed it would come in under that mark, although it’s likely he meant $499. Either way, that matches the basic iPad price and that’s before network subsidies are taken into account.
4G tech is also said to be under the hood, although it’s unclear whether this means WiMAX, LTE or HSPA+. With the iPad 2 just round the corner, RIM has a hell of a job on its hands to try and crack the nascent tablet market and come out on top.

The first Color E-Ink reader to have touchscreen from Hanvon
E-readers have been around for a while now; however their main disadvantage was their black and white picture. Doesn’t sound like a problem however when they equip the device with 3G, Wi-Fi and what not you want it to show the real colors of the web pages when you surf the web. The other thing I would like to have from a device like this is a touch screen. The new e-reader from Hanvon combines both features and completes the symphony with a big 10 inch screen.
Although 10 inches is a great size there is still a problem with the color on these screens. E Ink display is not able to give you a great crisp picture as you would have on a LCD screen. The picture is like… it’s like you are looking at a faded color photo. The other problem about color E Ink displays is that it can’t really show you motion video. Its maximum is simple animations with not a lot of movement going on.
Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac has arrived
Today a new version of Skype has appeared. This time it’s a 5.0 Beta version for Macs. As the version number indicates, it’s the same set of features as 5.0 PC version contains, but with a few Mac-only customizations. Apart from the smaller ones like simplified search and optimized single-windowed user interface you can now integrate your Mac address book into Skype. 5.0 Beta supports offline message delivery as well by the way. But there is some more.
One of the biggest updates in Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac is group video calling. That said, however, all users have to run version 5.0 Mac or PC.
Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac is already available from official website, it’s a 19.1 MB download. Skype officials urge you to upgrade even though it’s a Beta and I’m sure there are some other reasons other that end-user experience. It’s all your choice anyway.
Researchers from McGill University conducted research that looked at the influence of the GPS system of the human brain.Apparently, an avid user of GPS has the risk of suffering from problems with memory and orientation space.

Twitter says has "a lot of money in the bank"
Twitter co-founder Evan Williams said the popular microblogging company was not running low on capital, amid media reports that the company is considering raising a large round of funding.
Williams told an industry gathering in San Francisco on Wednesday that Twitter has "a lot of money in the bank." He declined to comment on whether the company was in discussions with investment firms about funding.
San Francisco-based Twitter has 175 million users and is one of the most popular Internet social networking services. The company, which allows its users to broadcast short, 140-character messages, or Tweets, to groups of "followers," has only recently started efforts to generate revenue through special ads that appear in certain parts of its service.
Williams, speaking at the Web 2.0 conference on Wednesday, said the company's initial efforts at generating advertising revenue had exceeded the company's expectations, though he declined to provide financial details.
India and RIM closer to deal on corporate email: report
RIM later issued a statement calling the report "inaccurate and misleading" and repeated that it deals with lawful access demands in a consistent manner around the world.
India has threatened to shut off RIM's encrypted email and instant messaging services unless it gains access to them, in a campaign driven by fears that unmonitored communication puts the country's security at risk.
The Mint paper said a series of meetings took place last week between RIM executives and officials from the Indian interior ministry and intelligence agency, and more were scheduled.
"They have in principle agreed to provide us recorded data from their servers," the paper quoted an interior ministry official as saying.
"Now they have assured us that they will discuss the issue first among themselves and find a way to meet our demands. Later, they would be providing live access to BES," the official told the paper, referring to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, through which secure corporate email is routed.
In its statement, RIM said its talks with India remain productive and consistent with its four principles for access requests:
- that they be legal
- that BlackBerry is not singled out
- that its enterprise security architecture is not changed
- that any deal is not specific to that country.
Orb TV aims to deliver streaming video sites Google TV can't
Orb TV is aiming to succeed where Google TV and Boxee have stumbled.
The new video-streaming product from Orb Networks aims to let users watch a wide variety of streaming video on their big-screen TVs. That sounds like a wide variety of Internet TV products that we've seen introduced this fall. The difference with Orb TV is that it should be able to deliver unfettered access to a wide variety of online video sites, including TV network sites (Hulu, ABC.com, NBC.com, CBS.com, and so forth) that have since been blocked when accessing from the built-in Flash-enabled Web browsers found on Google TV products, Boxee, and the PlayStation 3.
What's the catch? There are two, right off the bat. The Orb TV doesn't offer HD video, and it requires users to run the Orbcaster server software on a Mac or Windows PC elsewhere on their home network. That software streams the Web video to the Orb TV, which displays it on the television to which it's connected (via composite or component AV cables). In other words, you'll need to keep the PC running whenever you're watching the Orb TV.
